This development board has been designed and assembled with the view of you being able to make your own changes and tweaks - you can even dismantle the whole assembly once you become familiar with how it works! This means you don't end up with a board that has fixed components soldered on to it that you can't change. It also means that should you 'pop' a component you can easily replace it, without the need for complicated soldering.

You will receive a fully assembled board which will arrive preloaded with our test program. You will also receive a link to download our sample C code which has been commented throughout to enable you to understand what each part of the code does. Simple circuit diagrams are provided for each sample. The board has been designed and assembled to work with all the sample code that is provided, so there is no need to rewire your board for different sample code.

The assembled board consists of the following parts:

  • 2 * 840 tie point breadboards clipped together
  • 1 * Microchip PIC18F452
  • 1 * Alphanumeric LCD 2x16
  • 1 * 10MHz Resonator
  • 1 * 0.1µF Capacitor across the 0V and 5V rail
  • 1 * Reset Button for MCLR
  • 8 * General Purpose Buttons
  • 8 * 10kΩ pull-up Resistors connect to the General Purpose Buttons
  • 9 * 0.1µF debounce capacitors these are mounted underneath the General Purpose Buttons and Reset Button
  • 3 * 10k Variable Pot to control the LCD contrast, analogue input and analogue voltage reference
  • 2 * Blue LEDs with 330Ω resistor to 0V
  • 6 * Red LEDs with 330Ω resistor to 0V
  • 2 * RGB LEDs with 330Ω resistor to 5V (please note these are common anode LEDs)
  • 1 * DS18B20 1-WIRE Temperature Sensor with 4.7KΩ pull-up resistor
  • 1 * Speaker

Additionally, you will also receive 5 * 1m wire cable in various colours so that you can make your own links to various parts on the board.

The link we provide will give you sample code to show the following features:

  1. Simple LED on/off when a button is pressed down
  2. LCD display out
  3. Analogue to Digital
  4. Analogue to Digital with adjustable positive voltage reference
  5. Use of interrupts
  6. PWM to control LED brightness
  7. PWM to create sound
  8. Timer - Internal Clock Source
  9. Timer - External Clock Source
  10. Using the EEPROM to store data
  11. Temperature Sensor Via 1-WIRE

So what's not supplied?

  • You will need to a have PICkit2 or PICkit3 programmer, this can be supplied as an extra if required.
  • You will need MPLAB X and the MPLAB C18 compiler for PIC18 MCUs. These can both be downloaded free of charge from Microchip's website.
  • You will need a suitable 5V Power supply with bare ends to connect to the Power Rails of the board, this can be supplied as an extra if required.

This item will be fully tested prior to despatch. Please be careful when connecting your power to the rails and please ensure it is the right way round. Damage caused by improper use will void the warranty.
